Environment

  • Dynatrace Portal
  • Synthetic Monitoring Backbone

Symptoms

When a test is configured to run against 5 nodes per hour, how does the Dynatrace Portal schedule the test? Is it one test per node every 12 minutes so that in an hour it is 5 total test runs? Or are the tests fired randomly within the hour?

Solution

Since the change for Backbone to use Common Agent architecture, the scheduler will automatically distribute the tests across the nodes across the test frequency, so if you select 5 nodes every 1 hour you will get a measurement every (60/5) 12 minutes resulting in better coverage.

Knowing this now allows you to get the coverage you need, for instance running a test on 5 nodes every 5 minutes will result in test coverage every minute, something that was not possible on the previous architecture.
