Solution

When a test is initially activated, it immediately runs from all of the nodes assigned to the test. At first, these tests will all run simultaneously, but, as the test runs over time, variations in every node's response time will start to space the scheduling of the tests so that they are not running at the same time.

The reason for this is that a time stamp is placed on the data that the node has collected as soon as an individual node completes a test. Next, the node checks the test's frequency setting and schedules the next time it will run the transaction based off of the time stamp of the previous run. So if Node A receives its initial test results in 5 seconds but Node B doesn't receive its results for 7 seconds, Node B will start its next test 2 seconds after Node A's second test.

It is effectively impossible to schedule a test such that it runs at the same time from all nodes. However, you can manually distribute runs from nodes so that it will provide you some control over the process. To do this, follow the steps below.

To manually distribute test runs to nodes for an existing test, follow these steps:

  1. Remove most of the nodes (all but one or two) from the test. See below for detailed instructions on removing nodes from a test.

  2. A few minutes after the remaining nodes perform their next test run, add one or two more nodes back to the test.

  3. Repeat step two until all of the test's nodes are running the test again.

To manually distribute test runs to nodes for a new test:

  1. Create the test with only one or two nodes.

  2. After a few minutes, add a few more nodes.

  3. Repeat step two until all of the nodes you want assigned to the test are running it.

To add/remove nodes from a test:

In Dynatrace Portal (portal.dynatrace.com):

  1. Click Setup Tests.
  2. Click Tests or Configuration Summary.
  3. Find the test you want to update nodes and click the test name.
  4. To add nodes to a test, select them from the Available Nodes box and click the right arrow to move them to the Nodes selected box.

  5. To remove nodes from a test, select them from the Nodes selected box and click the left arrow to move them to the Available Nodes box.

  6. Click Update or Update and Finish. The nodes are added or removed from the test.

In the Dynatrace Classic Portal (www.gomeznetworks.com):

  1. click Admin Tab.

  2. Click Add/Edit Backbone Tests in the Test Admin section of the Active XF box.

  3. Select the test you want in the All Backbone Tests and Folders box and click the left arrow to move it to the Selected Tests or Folder to edit box.

  4. Click Edit. The Select settings to edit page appears.

  5. Select the Nodes check box under the Test Configuration section.

  6. Click Continue. The Nodes page appears.

  7. To add nodes to a test, select them from the Available Nodes box and click the right arrow to move them to the Nodes selected box.

  8. To remove nodes from a test, select them from the Nodes selected box and click the left arrow to move them to the Available Nodes box.

  9. Click Submit. The nodes are added or removed from the test.
