Why is the sum of the parts of a connection greater than the total end-to-end connection time?

The total end-to-end time for a given connection is the duration measured from the moment a connection is established to the moment that the connection is closed.

The total connect time includes:

  • DNS Lookup – Translating the domain name into an IP address.

  • ConnectionConnecting to the IP address.

  • Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)

  • Object download time

  • Connection idle times

All of these actions occur during the total connection. Depending on how many objects are downloaded and how long the connection is idle before or after these downloads, the total connection time could be much larger than the total end-to-end connection time, which is the sume of the reported DNS Lookup, Connection, and SSL times
