Overview

This plugin counts the number of client logins & provides two metrics: Successful Logins & Failed Logins and reports per username.

Name and Version

User Logins Plugin

Compatible with

5.6 and above

Author

Adam Gardner - Dynatrace

License

Dynatrace BSD

Support Level

Not Supported

Download

com.gardner.userlogins_1.1.0.jar

Current Limitations

1) It won't count historical logins when it first runs, so to get data, setup the monitor then re-login to the client.

2) This must run on a collector installed locally to the server you wish to query.

3) Underlying metrics upon which this plugin relies are only updated when a user clicks login or test connection in client. Hence if a user logs into the client then leaves it open or logged in, there will be no new data generated. I suggest you use the metrics from this plugin in combination with the "Client socket connections" metric (from dynatrace client monitoring system profile) to get a true picture of currently connected users.

4) Does not currently support web dashboard logins due to a limitation of the Dynatrace logging. Please comment below if this is an important requirement.

Installation

Install plugin via client as normal

Usage

  1. Create a monitor based on this plugin.

  2. Point the Server.0.0.log path to the server log file (plugin defaults to x64 dynatrace 6.1 path). Update as necessary.

    Hey Adam,

Great plugin, currently using it at a customer site and it is working great!  Quick question, although the plugin doesn't have the metrics, do you know if there is a way to pull the web interface logins by user id?  Or is this data simply not available in AppMon?

    Thanks!

    Josh

    Great Plugin Adam,

Any way we could pull web dashboard logins in too? With more features moving there with each release this could be a must have.

    Thank you!

      Hi Jacob,

In dynatrace 6.5 (dynatrace self monitoring profile) UEM is enabled which captures the Username which is passed as a session attribute. With that you can get the successful logins as visits are tagged with usernames. But failed logins still can't be traced if it's via web dashboard.

Even in the web dashboard you have the Business analytics view for each visits.

    This is a great tool.

Is there a way to split the output to show the username of the successful login?  I'm seeing that for "Failed Logins".  Also, does this report on unique users?

    Hey

Can this plug in be used to get client logins for multiple collectors that are not on the same server (DT server) for which we need the number of client logins?

    Thanks and Regards.
