To simplify problem resolution, Dynatrace integrates with Eclipse through the Dynatrace Eclipse Integration Plugin.
The
Dynatrace Eclipse Integration Plugin enable you to:

  • launch applications with an injected Dynatrace Agent directly from Eclipse
  • retrieve & display the key architectural metrics (such as number of SQL queries, external API calls, exceptions and log messages) from your tests
  • perform look-ups of sources files and methods from applications under diagnosis in Dynatrace Application Monitoring

Features

Launcher

With the Dynatrace Launcher, Auto instrument your Java applications from Eclipse:

Test Result

When lauching JUnit tests, the plug-in will automatically register a test run to the Dynatrace Server. The results and key architectural metrics are automatically retrieved and displayed in the Test Result tab.

The test results are also visible in the Dynatrace Client for further drill-down to the PurePath level.

More information about the Test Automation feature: Test Automation Explained

Source Code Look-up

When Dynatrace identifies a source code fragment as the root cause of a particular problem, you can go directly from the Dynatrace Client to the exact location within your Eclipse development environment where you need to make changes.

Customer reports that with a fresh version of Eclipse, dynaTrace Plugin will not install until the PDE dependency is resolved. This is not mentioned in the doc.

He recommends we configure our plugin to automatically download PDE if it's found to not exist.

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

Thanks, this will be fixed in a future version. For now please install the "Eclipse SDK" and "Eclipse Platform SDK" packages (via builtin Eclipse update tool, in the "Eclipse Project Updates" section) before installing the plugin on a JDT-only eclipse installation.

Is there any reason this plugin is compiled with java 6? Can we recompile it with java 1.5 so the 1.5 community can utilize it?

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

If running Eclipse on OSX with java 1.5, the plugin wont' run as it requires 1.6.
Here's a workaround to this problem:
Requirements: Mac Cocoa 64bit with Intel chip
Edit the info.plist file under the eclipse application directory.
      Add the following line:

The dynaTrace Eclipse plugin will now work.

  3. Anonymous (login to see details)

A URL referred to on the page doesn't work:

"Use the URL http://www.dynatrace.com/eclipseintegration/ for the current version"

It returns a message that the directory contents can't be listed.

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

The URL http://www.dynatrace.com/eclipseintegration/ is only to be used from within Eclipse itself when specifying new sites in the Software Update dialog window. There is no content at this URL for a browser.

  4. Anonymous (login to see details)

I have some problem to use the url with GlassFish Version: 1.2 (based on Eclipse 3.5.1)  :

    Unknown Host: http://www.dynatrace.com/eclipseintegration/site.xml
      Unknown Host: http://www.dynatrace.com/eclipseintegration/site.xml
      www.dynatrace.com

Seems like you cant resolve the dynatrace domain. have you tried browsing to that file? can you flush your dns?

      1. Anonymous (login to see details)

Yes, i can browsing to that file.

And i flush my DNS, the problem persists.
But, an another file has not found, "http://www.dynatrace.com/eclipseintegration/content.xml", during the "Software Update".

Thanks Mounir - I will forward this to our R&D Team and will keep you posted

        2. Anonymous (login to see details)

It turned out that the problem was caused by the fact that Mounir tried to install the plugin on his GlassFish Application Server and not for his Eclipse IDE.
The dynaTrace Eclipse Plugin is only intended for the Eclipse IDE

Does this plugin work with Eclipse 3.5?  I get an error message "No connected Eclipse IDE found".

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

Is the problem up-to-date? This plug-in should work with all releases of Eclipse 3.5. Just be sure the property "dynaTrace Client web service port" (in Eclipse via Window -> Preferences -> dynaTrace integration) match with the non-SSL REST Web Service port in the dynaTrace Client (via Settings -> dynaTrace Client... -> Services). The default port is 8030. The checkbox "Allow non-ssl connections" must be selected of course.

Does the Eclipse "Error Log" view says something like "Connection to dynaTrace Client failed, will retry every 10 seconds.."?

I came across a case where the agent machine did not have access to the internet. Here are the steps provided to configure the dynaTrace plugin:

    1. Download the plugin jar file from an alternate source
    2. Place the plugin in the 'plugins' folder for eclipse
    3. Restart Eclipse to allow pickup of the new plugin
    4. Once loaded navigate to Window->Prefernces->dynaTrace integration
    5. Point the library to the 'dtagent.dll'
    6. Name your agent and point it to the dT Server

      Hello Olivier,
you are right, the update site is not maintained right now.

The manual installation just worked for me.
Are you logged-in on the APM community site when you try to download the plugin? Which version of Eclipse do you use?

      Best regards,
      Richard

        Hello Richard,
I was able to install the plugin with the OFFLINE method on eclipse 3.8.
I will test the codelink feature soon.

    Hi,

Need help for configuring dynatrace plugin for eclipse

I have followed the above steps and was able to install dynatrace eclipse plugin  http://www.dynatrace.com/eclipseintegration.

Once the plugin is installed ,if i try to open the source code from dynatrace i am still getting the message "No connected 'Eclipse' IDE has found.

can u tell me what else is required to make it work.

  10. Anonymous (login to see details)

    Hi Shalini,

at first be sure to activate CodeLink via menu "Window" > "Preferences" > "dynaTrace integration" > "CodeLink". Check the Checkbox "Enable CodeLink".

If the problem persists, please open the "Error Log" View in Eclipse via menu "Window" > "Show View" > "Error Log" or "Other" > "General" > "Error Log". Look for an entry of the plugin "com.dynatrace.eclipseintegration" (e.g. "Connection to dynaTrace Client failed, will retry every 10 seconds..")

In this case maybe the network port is blocked by a firewall. Check (and alter setting if needed) the port in Eclipse ("Window" > "Preferences" > "dynaTrace integration") and the dynaTrace Client ("Settings" > "dynaTrace Client..." > "Services" > listen port of non-SSL connection). The default port is 8030.

    Best Regards,

    Richard

  11. Anonymous (login to see details)

Thanks. I checked all the settings.

    1)CodeLink Checkbox is enabled

2)dynaTrace Client ("Settings" > "dynaTrace Client..." > "Services" > listen port of non-SSL connection). The default port is 8030.

But in the error log i can see some issue like:

    com.sun.jersey.api.client.UniformInterfaceException: POST http://localhost:8030/rest/management/codelink/connect/ returned a response status of 502
        at com.sun.jersey.api.client.WebResource.handle(WebResource.java:563)

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

      Hi Shalini,

which version of dynaTrace (Client) are you using? Can you verify that the dT Client is listening to port 8030. Use the command 'netstat -a -o' in cmd, look at the 'PID' column (should be the rightmost one) and match this PID for port 8030 with e.g. the Windows Task Manager. It should be a 'javaw.exe' process running the dT Client.

Any way to add additional agent parameters to the launcher?

    For example: -agentpath:"C:\Program Files\dynaTrace\dynaTrace 5.5.0\agent\lib\dtagent.dll"=name=Test_Tier,server=localhost:9998,loglevel=fine,wait=300

In Eclipse dynaTrace Integration Configuration would be -

    LibraryC:\Program Files\dynaTrace\dynaTrace 5.5.0\agent\lib\dtagent.dll
    Agent NameTest_Tier
    dynaTrace Serverlocalhost
    Port9998

But is there anyway to add the extra parameters loglevel and wait?

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

      Hi Markie,

currently there is no way to add additional parameters when using the Eclipse dT launcher. I've created an issue to implement this enhancement.

As workaround I can only offer to use the default launcher and add the "-agentpath" option as VM argument. Of course this is not comfortable when you want to run a lot of launch configs.

An other workaround would be to create a launch config "pattern" that asks for a class to launch. See http://help.eclipse.org/indigo/index.jsp?topic=%2Forg.eclipse.jdt.doc.user%2Ftips%2Fjdt_tips.html and search for ${java_type_name}. Please also see http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13965705/how-to-use-the-eclipse-launch-configuration-string-prompt-for-two-values

      Hi Shalini,

so there is a version check that rejects your Eclipse plugin 5.6 to connect with a 4.2 Client. You can try to install the 4.2 plugin (it's available right above as manual download) manually using the dropins folder in Eclipse. Anyway, this way of installing the plugin is not supported by us. As dT 4.2 is not supported anymore, this version of the plugin was removed from the update repository.

This means some manual work to create a matching e.g. feature.xml. Please consult the Eclipse documentation on how to do this.

      BR Richard

PS: good news: the Eclipse plugin version for 4.2 is still available on our update site. So just uncheck "Show only the latest versions of available software", select 4.2 version (uninstall current version before e.g. 5.6) and install this version. And please do not update this plugin as long as you are using dT 4.2.

      Hi Shalini,

seems to be a weird problem. Please consult Client REST Interface documentation. E.g. try to call http://localhost:8030/rest/management/profiles from a browser to get sure your call reaches the dT Client and is not blocked by any firewall. You should get a list of all system profiles in some XML format.

BTW: the project containing the source code to lookup of course must be opened in Eclipse.

can u tell me why this message will get displayed, as i am not sure something is blocked my any firewall ?

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

      Hi Shalini,

that's quit difficult to analyze your network configuration from remote. You can try trace route using the command tracert (on Windows) on the commandline. Just execute tracert localhost to see where requests to localhost go.

Do you know your firewall configuration? Maybe you have to add an exception for port 8030 or application dtclient.exe.

      Best Regards,

      Richard

    hi All,

i am trying to integrate Eclipse with Dynatrace Client, however, i have run into issue (sad) ... I am getting "Source Lookup was not successful" error message while trying to open the Source Code.

    DT Client : 6.0.06738

    Eclipse version : 3.5.2 (Galileo)

Dynatrace Integration for Eclipse : version 5.6.0.5802

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

      Hi,

can you take a look into the Eclipse "Error" view? Is there an entry that the integration plugin could not connect to the dT Client?

Do you have opened your Eclipse project containing the code to look up?

      BR

      Richard

  19. Anonymous (login to see details)

    Hi Richard,

I have not opened my application code in eclipse.. I thought it is not needed and all what is required is just to have agent hooked to my remote application server and my local IDE to listen to my local Client on NON-SSL REST port...

Is it mandatory that i should have the source code in my local IDE ? if it is required, then i just have the .ear file and not the source code – will that work?

    Regards

    Nitin

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

      Hi Nitin,

of course you need to open the project. Otherwise no code search / look up can be performed. The plugin just uses the same functionality as integrated in the Eclipse "Search" menu. And this search will only be successful if you have same open projects in your workspace (smile).

So there is no source code inside the .ear file?

      BR

      Richard

  20. Anonymous (login to see details)

I see only .class file in the .ear file received from dev. (sad)

  21. Anonymous (login to see details)

I manually downloaded the 6.0 version of the plugin and copied into the dropin folder  in eclipse. When I run "eclipse.exe -clean" and when I checked on the "installed software" under "installation details", I do not see the plugin was installed. When I tried the online method by addiing http://www.dynatrace.com/eclipseintegration/" as a new site, it only shows the 5.6 version of the plugin. It seems that the online web site does not have the 6.0 version of the plugin.

      Hello Vinson,

Eclipse plugins for Dynatrace 6.0 and 6.1 are now available on our update site, we're sorry for the delay.

      Best regards,

      Wiktor Bachnik

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

The dynaTrace client opens that part. Do you have the dynatrace client open on the same machine as where you run Eclipse? If so - make sure that when you launch the dynatrace client that port 8020 is not used by another application of yours. If that would be the case then our client cant use this port for the communication with external tools such as our eclipse integration plugin

    Hi,

I’m trying to compile easyTravel’s source code in Eclipse (Luna).

I’ve noticed the next case related to Dynatrace Plugin:

    -              When code is imported and libraries & buildpath are set, all seems to compile ok.

    -              After install Dynatrace Plugin for Eclipse without problems and restart Eclipse, now it rises the next building error in the "easyTravelPlugin" folder:

    In plugin.xml (line 6):

    “Unknown extension point: 'com.dynatrace.diagnostics.InstallerContent'”

    In MANIFEST.MF (line 6 too):

    “Bundle 'com.dynatrace.diagnostics.sdk' cannot be resolved”

Could you please take a look? Thanks!
    Daniel

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

      Hi Daniel,

This problem is not connected with Dynatrace Eclipse Integration Plugin at all.

In order to resolve it, you must create a proper target platform for your build environment in Eclipse. You can follow these instructions:

Define a new Target Platform which includes "com.dynatrace.diagnostics.sdk" as bundle. This is done via "Window -> Preferences -> Plug-In Development", create a new Target Platform and point it to a recent installation of dynaTrace, e.g. "C:\Program Files\dynaTrace\dynaTrace 6.1.0\server\plugins", under "Content" deselect all, select "com.dynatrace.diagnostics.sdk" and choose "Add Required" to get all dependencies.

I confirmed with easyTravel developers that this problem is only cosmetic, so even without the target platform easyTravel should build correctly.

      Regards,
      Wiktor Bachnik

        Hi Wiktor,

After following your instructions the problem is solved (smile)

You are right, it was only cosmetic. Thank you so much!

        Daniel

I have a customer where their eclipse's CPU usage goes to 50% with the plugin activated. As soon as they disable the plugin it goes to normal levels. Anybody else has seen this?

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

      Hi Kristof,

Is your customer using the latest plugin release? Is the same thing happening in the 6.1 version? Please try to compare those two versions if time allows, they are almost identical but ship with different REST API client libraries.

Are there any signs in the Dynatrace Client logs that REST API is being constantly queried?

    Hi guys,

We are thinking of integrating AppMon with the Eclipse plugin for source look up only but most of the developers here are using the WebStart client? Would the plugin work with the WebStart client?

    Thanks!

    1. Anonymous (login to see details)

Hi. I think we just discussed this via the chat. My answer was: yes - as long as the Dynatrace Client can open its Client REST Listening Socket it should be fine. Thats the way Dynatrace Client communicates with the Eclipse Plugin

      Hello Tomasz.

The path "c:\workspaces\dynatrace_both\jloadtrace\agent\lib64\dtagent.dll" is a sample path given in plugin configuration (https://github.com/Dynatrace/Dynatrace-Eclipse-Integration-Plugin#global-settings) which is to be replaced with your local agent installation location. Please look into your Dynatrace installation directory and find the agent dll for your environment. Sample paths for Windows:

      "C:\Program Files\dynaTrace\Dynatrace 6.5\agent\lib64\dtagent.dll"
      "C:\Program Files\dynaTrace\Dynatrace 6.5\agent\lib\dtagent.dll"

The installation instructions on GitHub talk about using a CodeLink subdir inside the extracted zip file. But, there is no such dir. And, pointing Eclipse to the root dir after zip is extracted is not making it work. Eclipse complains that there is no software to install. The workaround I used is to simply drop the .jar file under plugins dir to "dropins" dir of Eclipse. Upon restart Eclipse would recognize the new plugin and would show the new plugin button with new RunAs configurations. Is this workaround ok, and just want to make sure that no functionality is lost.

    Thanks

    Srinivas
