Symptoms

During this install I came across some differences between the actual install and the install guide and I therefore have the following questions that I hope you could help me with.

I have downloaded dynatrace-mainframe-agent-5.5.0.5228.zip from the APM download page on September 16. 2013

Is the z/OS Data Collector a subsystem?
During the installation of the z/OS Data Collector I came across several different messages.

* In SZDTSAMP(ZDCSYSIN) it says
***********************************************************************
*
* zDC identity
*
* SUBSYSTEM_ID() - specifies the name of the zDC. The zDC no
* longer runs as a z/OS subsystem so the name is unimportant.
* If you choose to run additional zDC processes on the same LPAR
* for testing or other purposes, each must have a unique name.
*
* DEFAULT() - When running multiple zDC processes on one LPAR,
* you must specify DEFAULT(NO) for each additonal zDC. All data
* is collected by the default zDC except for CICS agents that
* specify an INITPARM to override to an alternate zDC name.
*
* DISPLAY_NAME() - identifies this zDC in certain messages.
*
***********************************************************************

I ran the ZDCMEPC job on CW09 and used the CANCEL "C" to cancel the z/OS Data Collector job. When I submitted the job again I got the following message:

ZDC101I END OF SYSIN PARAMETER LISTING
ZDC006E SUBSYSTEM HDKK ALREADY EXISTS AND IS ACTIVE
ZDC019E zDC INITIALIZATION FAILED. RETCODE=037C0008/000000DB

ZDC215I TERMINATION STARTED FOR zDC HDKK

So is the z/OS Data Collector a subsystem or not?

Solution

The statement quoted above is correct.

The zDC is no longer a subsystem, and the documentation has been updated to reflect that, but the word "subsystem" still appears in many places, including the SUBSYSTEM_ID parameter and various system messages.

Canceling the zDC multiple times quickly is not a good operational practice, and it can cause the zDC cleanup to fail. To recover from this error, you must run the ZDCDELET job as described in the documentation.

The zDC name is important because it is used to specify where an agent sends its data when it is configured to not use the default zDC.
