What's new in dynaTrace 3.5?

Icon

Check out the dynaTrace 3.5 Release Notes and dynaTrace 3.5.1 Release Notes and find out what you are missing out on!

April 29th, 2011

We are proud to present dynaTrace 3.5.2.

This update includes key stability improvements  and adds Firefox support to the existing Internet Explorer support for browser diagnostics and test automation.

We recommend customers to upgrade dynaTrace Agents, dynaTrace Collectors and dynaTrace Servers to 3.5.2. Please see the Upgrade and Migration Guide and Deployment Guide for detailed instructions.

Client Update

Icon

If you are using the Webstart Client, the new Client will be installed automatically. For standard clients we recommend you to explicitly install the 3.5.2 Client alongside the 3.5.0 or 3.5.1 Client as dynaTrace 3.5.2 Clients cannot connect to dynaTrace 3.5.0 or 3.5.1 Servers.

Multi-Browser Diagnostics and Test Automation

Browser Diagnostics for Firefox now available!

With dynaTrace 3.5.2 the unique diagnostic capabilities for Internet Explorer are now also available for Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 4; all performance related browser activities can now be traced with dynaTrace. These include:

  • JavaScript execution
  • DOM access
  • Page rendering
  • Network communication

On-top of the support for Firefox, dynaTrace provides all automation capabilities allowing you to trace your automated browser tests on Firefox and Internet Explorer. You can also compare the performance of your web application in Firefox and Internet Explorer to see whether your application needs specific performance improvements for a particular browser.
To trace your web application in Firefox, all you need to do is to install the Firefox extension. This functionality is available if you have licensed a browser agent - but you do NOT need a separate license for Firefox. All existing browser licenses work for Internet Explorer and Firefox. Of course you can also conveniently launch Firefox directly from the dynaTrace Client:

All-in-one Comparison of Browser Test Runs

When comparing two test runs, dynaTrace now also displays the Browser Timeline dashlet in comparison mode - so you can now compare both test runs one below the other. This way you can easily spot the differences between tests and quickly answer questions such as - was it the server response time, or was it the JavaScript or was it the network? You no longer have to click through different dashlets to find out what went wrong.

Resolved Issues

dynaTrace 3.5.2 incorporates all fixes that are resolved with the May 2011 update for dynaTrace 3.5.1. Both - dynaTrace 3.5.2 and the May update for 3.5.1 - include also all fixes that have been published with the monthly 3.5.1 updates for February, March and April. You can find a full list here.

Most important resolved issues are:

  • Values for split Business Transactions or Measures are not adding up to total value on dynaTrace Servers running on multi-core hardware with more than 2 cores
  • Under very specific circumstances, the dynaTrace Agent may crash the JVM when the dynaTrace Collector is not reachable
  • Problems to reconnect all dynaTrace Agents if a high number (>100) of dynaTrace Agents is restarted simultaneously
  • Under very high load and high availability scenarios, the watchdog occasionally restarts the dynaTrace Server
  • Sporadic dynaTrace Server restarts if session storage quota is exceeded
  • Failure to connect to Oracle 11g database
  • PurePaths can timeout due to runtime suspensions or garbage collector runs
  • .NET HTTP Sessions not shown in memory dump
  • Client update mechanism for multiple clients at the same time potentially fails

Listed below are the supported operating systems, JVMs and the mininum heap and storage requirements to install dynaTrace. Typically these minimum requirements are suitable for demonstration purposes. Please refer to the Deployment Guide for production-ready hardware requirements - based on the size of your dynaTrace deployment.

dynaTrace Agent

  • Windows 32/64, Linux x32/x64 and PPC 32/64, Solaris SPARC 32/64, Solaris x86/x64, AIX 32/64 Power 5 and Power 6 Architecture, z/OS 31/64, z/Linux 31/64, HP-UX PARISC, HP-UX IA64
  • Oracle (Sun) JVM, IBM JVM, JRockit JVM, HP JVM
  • 10MB disk space

dynaTrace Browser Agent

  • Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8 (32 bit, Windows)
  • Firefox 3.6 and 4 (32bit, Windows)

dynaTrace Server

  • Windows 7/Vista/XP, 2000/2003/2008 Server, Linux, AIX, Solaris SPARC, Solaris x86/64
    • Windows and Linux installers/packages contain a private 32bit/64bit JRE
    • AIX requires IBM JDK 1.6 SR2+
    • Solaris SPARC and Solaris x86/64 require J2SE 6.0
  • min. 1GB disk space
  • min. 1GB, typical 4-12 GB memory

See the Deployment Guide for more specific hardware recommendations.

dynaTrace Collector

  • Windows 7/Vista/XP, 2000/2003/2008 Server, Linux, Solaris SPARC, Solaris x86/64, AIX Power 5 and Power 6, z/OS, z/Linux, HP-UX
  • Oracle (Sun) JVM 1.6+, IBM JVM 1.6 SR2+, HP JVM 1.6+
  • minimum 1GB disk space
  • minimum 128MB, recommended 1-2GB memory

See the Deployment Guide for more specific hardware recommendations.

dynaTrace Client

  • Windows 7/Vista/XP, 2000/2003/2008 Server, SUSE/RedHat Linux with GTK
  • 100MB disk space
  • 1GB memory

dynaTrace Repository

  • Relational database of choice
    • Embedded database (not for production use!)
    • Oracle 10g/11g
    • Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005/2008
    • IBM DB2 Version 9
