Hi,

My client has proposed a way to do Dynatrace backup from backside by using snapshots. They are using Dynatrace Managed and has 3 nodes.

Anyone has done the backup using snapshots before? If yes, please help share the pros and cons and also steps you guys take to do the activity.

Thanks

Hi,

we had a similar situation with a client some time ago, and snapshots were also considered. In one case, 2 Cassandra nodes went down (no quorum). Restoring the VMs from snapshots actually brought the cluster back, Cassandra recovered, and interestingly Elasticsearch didn’t show shard issues.

However:

some data was missing (lost transactions),

the cluster state was not fully consistent,

and most importantly — this approach is not supported.

According to Dynatrace support, the only officially supported method is the built-in backup/restore mechanism, as @Julius_Loman mentioned.

You should always use the built-in Dynatrace backup/restore mechanism as your primary and supported strategy.
If you rely on snapshots, support might refuse assistance, and you risk issues with Cassandra (quorum/consistency) and Elasticsearch (shards/rebalancing).
