Ownership Information in "classic" alerting profiles and notifications

Am I right that the ownership information can not be used in the "classic" settings for alerting profiles and notifications?

Or for that matter cannot be used for assigning enties e.g. to management zones (which would be a nice feature as well)?

Yes, I believe that is correct. If you would like to use ownership data in your alerting you would need to utilize a workflow. As far as using that information to create management zones you could use the same metadata that you used to define ownership to create the management zone. For example, if you are defining ownership via a tag, you could utilize that tag to filter your management zone.
