We have a .NET application that runs as a Windows Service (MyService.exe).

I want DynaTrace to let me know if that application is not running.

What is the proper procedure to configure this sort of monitoring?

Are you talking about the service, or the application as a whole?

For service go to the .Net Service, and edit the anomaly detection. For application, It will alert you when there is unexpected low/no traffic.

Can monitoring be turned on for specific processes within a process group, or is it all or nothing?

This is always done on processgroup level. But you can organize your processgroups accordingly (e.g. to put one specific process - by parameters, cmdline etc. - in a dedicated processgroup)
