1 Second Timeframe

Hello everyone,

we have a customer who is asking if it possible to have:

  • "1 Second polling of (cpu load, cpu time free, cpu wait state,
mem used, mem active, disk, IO, JVM GC stats(have the GC logs already), context
switching, NIC interface through put, threading configuration )"

  • "The reason why is the current 10 second polling becomes an
average of an average, that is too coarse grained for tuning purposes"

We were wondering whether this can be accomplished with AppMon 6.5 or not.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Fabio.

No, the 10 second interval for cyclic measures can not be adjusted.

Fabio, To add what Patrick said, I believe your customer needs to be encouraged to look at it from a different perspective. The issue is not that it's an average of an average, increasing the sampling rate does not change that reality.

The real question to ask is what exactly they're trying to accomplish. And to determine when these values exceed a threshold, the 10sec interval works quite well and allows for tracking the min, max, avg values for any time interval.

Increasing the sampling interval to 1 sec would not accomplish any better understanding of system behavior but would certainly increase overhead and complexity of the monitoring solution without any benefit.

Thanks Joseph and Patrick.

I have already let my customer know; let's see what he comes back with.

In the meantime I'd like to thank you for the insight you've given me.

Regards,

Fabio
