We are updating our windows servers for having the 6.2 Agent (msi) installed on our machines. Previously we had only the 5.5 Agent. The install of 6.2 works fine but we have a question related to the dynatrace web server agent windows service and modules. For our web site:
- We removed the 5.5 IIS web server modules
- Added the 6.2 IIS web server modules
After an IIS reset we were checking the dynatrace web server agent 6.2 windows service and saw it was in a stopped state. We tried re-starting it but was unsuccessful. Next we stopped the 5.5.0 agent window service and then tried again in starting the 6.2 agent windows service which it re-started successfully.
My question is if the steps followed are what we are supposed to for ensuring a clean install (including UEM). We figured for UEM specifically we wanted to ensure the new agent binaries were being referenced. Thanks
Solved! Go to Solution.
to instrument IIS you need 2 processes:
- The module deployed in IIS which you seem to have deployed correctly. It starts when IIS comes up.
- The master agent, which runs as a windows service so can be stopped or started via windows services.
The module and the service start independently.
I think what happened is that because the service for 5.5 was still active it was "hijacking" the port that the new service for 6.2 was trying to use. By stopping it, it allowed the new 6.2 service to start.
Uninstalling the IIS module will not remove the service as they are independent (they do talk to each other though). A full windows dynatrace 5.5 uninstall should have taken care of the old service.
I hope it makes sense.
Thank you so much for the quick response. Yes we were wondering about doing an uninstall of the 5.5 agent but we were not sure if that would impact something else. For instance we also see a dynatrace 5.5.0 host agent windows service running. We don't see an equivalent windows service for 6.2 so if we do an uninstall of the 5.5 agent will that also remove this 5.5 host agent windows service and would that cause any impact? Thanks
