Our service account failed authentication when it tried do connect to remote host to check services status and we only picked up the auth failed after we checked the monitor status.

What you can try is setting up an incident that has the sole purpose of checking that the monitor is executing and returning measures. You would need to pick any measure that is returned by the monitor (or add a new measure which can just be another instance of an existing one) and set the aggregation of the incident condition to 'count' and the lower severe threshold to 0. What this means is that if the monitor does not return a measurement (i.e null) or stops running at all the incident will fire. You'll need to match the timeframes up so that there will always be at least one execution in your incident window but other than that you can set up an email or however else you would like to be informed that the monitor has failed/stopped running.
