Setup Chart/Alarms Based on Method Exit due to Exceptinos

Hi all,

I noticed that Dynatrace is able to tell when a method is exit due to exception in execution. The count for this is also highlighted under the exceptions column in the Methods dashlet.

In my case, a separate line for Exceptions sensor is not triggered. I would like to know if these is any way to chart the number of Method Exit due to Exception (Same as the ones highlighted under the Methods Dashlet), and to setup alerts based on the count of exceptions triggered this way.

Thanks very much!

Hi

what you are describing is what we call unhandled exceptions.

You can chart the following out of the box measures: unhandled Exceptions or inter tier unhandled exceptions.

For alerts, just clone them and change the threshold to whatever seems suitable for you.

If you need a generic breakdown per method outside the method dashlet then I'm afraid you cannot. This is because measures and business transactions force you to define the method name explicitly (no * option).

BTW Dynatrace detects these exceptions via the error detection section of the profile: (https://community.dynatrace.com/community/display/...

Typically, you would let Dynatrace handle it via the "failure rate too high" out of the box alert and baselines:

Hi Flo,

Actually, it is possible to wildcard methods for a BT filter. I have seen it done with regex, and I converted the regex to use simply contains with no input to make it more efficient and that seemed to work just as well.

Unfortunately, I am having no luck uploading a screen shot of my measure. But if anyone wants a screen shot, let me know and I can email it.

Thanks,

dave
