What is the difference between Classic Agent and Appmon Agent in AppMon 7.1?

dravisaanka
Guide

In 7.1 the Collector Configuration has two options, Listen to Classic Agents at and Listen to AppMon Agents at.

Wanted to know the difference between them. We upgraded from AppMon 7.0. We use JAVA, .NET, Web Server and Nodejs agents. Does these come under Classic Agents or AppMon Agents?

Hello Devi,

AppMon provides the ability to choose between 2 different agent platforms: the Classic Agent, which is the default agent platform and the new AppMon Agent.

  • All the mentioned agents by you are technology based agents and they covered by both.

Babar

Did you do a Agent platform switch? If not, it's Classic.

I don't understand what you mean by Agent Platform switch. Do you have a link to the documentation, in case we plan to do it in the future.

Hello Devi,

Below is the answer to your question.

For easy migration from existing installations, every 6.x (or later) Bootstrap Agent is capable to switch back and forth between Classic Agent and the AppMon Agent. There is no need to re-configure the Agent injection. The switch of the agent platforms can be simply triggered in the AppMon Client.

Review the below link for more insight.

Thanks Babar.

Hi Babar,

Sorry for bothering..

but i still one doubt. Our users are using dynatrace agent 6.3, 7.0(Classic). Now my question, does use need to upgrade there clients to 7.2 agent manually or

this Agent platform switch will do the installation. What will be the impact or feature by switching between platforms.

Hello @chiranjit D.

Basically 6.x (or later) Bootstrap Agent is capable to switch back and forth between Classic Agent and the AppMon Agent. There is no need to re-configure the Agent injection.

Therefore, you just verify the bootstrap version of the agents before switching from Classic Agent and the AppMon Agent.

You can see this information in the Agents Overview Dashboard for all the system profiles in one go.

Below are the few benefits of AppMon Agent:

  • End-to-end encryption using https
  • Code-instrumentation on the Agent

    • Faster agent startup time
    • Less collectors required
    • Almost zero pressure on collectors
  • Easy traffic tunneling using https based protocol
  • Better Configuration Management

    • No webserver master agent required
  • Support for new platforms, technology & features which are not available with the Classic Agents.

Have a look on the below link for more insight.

Hi Babar,

So it means that users are not required to uninstall Classic agents. We can leverage the feature of Agent switch platform, right..?

Secondly, i tried switching to some of the agents but i am getting this error.

Hello @chiranjit D.

Yes. You don’t need to uninstall and reinstall install new agents in case you already have 6 or 6+ bootstrap agents version.

AppMon agent uses different ports than the Classic agent, therefore, you will have to open the ports according to requirements.

Below link has a table whshows the default communication ports used for communication between AppMon components.
