At Dynatrace, we have amazing, experienced, and knowledgeable people who support the Community. One of these people is Thomas Wirth who enjoys solving riddles and mysteries and likes to figure out how things work. Maybe that’s why he is not leaving users without any answer and doing his best to solve their issues related to his specialization.

Can you tell us a little bit about your professional life? What is your role in the company and what do you do in your job?

I’ve started working as a software engineer at Dynatrace in the Linz office back in November 2014.

Today I work as a product owner for the mobile agent team, where I'm responsible for the Android platform. The mobile agent team is responsible for providing OneAgent for the mobile platforms Android and iOS. Additionally, we also provide plugins for the different application builds, including hybrid and cross-platform builds (like Cordova, React Native, Flutter, …).

Together with my colleagues, Product Owners for the areas iOS and Hybrid/Cross-platform, we refine and prioritize the workload for our team. We also constantly monitor the technology evolution in the mobile market and adjust our product based on these evolutions.

What do you like the most about the Dynatrace platform? What parts of Dynatrace do you use?

Because of my role in the company, I mostly work with Real User Monitoring and OneAgent for Android. I like the troubleshooting capabilities that Dynatrace offers. It allows me to understand how the user interacted with the app and gives me more insight into how crashes occur.

Have you ever had any interesting use case for the Dynatrace platform that you found to be particularly intriguing? Could you tell us about it?

For me, the instrumentation process is one of the most fascinating components of our product. To see, which code parts are instrumented and how these parts are modified to allow Dynatrace to monitor the application.

The most interesting and unique journey, that I was part of, was the transition of the instrumentation process inside the Dynatrace Android Gradle plugin. Where we moved from DEX to Java byte code instrumentation. It allowed us to explore both formats in detail and optimize the code parts that are instrumented.

What brought you to our Community?

The first time I heard from the Dynatrace community was through a college. I was working as a software engineer on the OneAgent for Android and a college asked me if I know the answer to an Android-related question that was posted there. Since then, I’m part of the Community and regularly check if there are technical questions regarding my working area.

Why do you think it’s worth being a part of the Dynatrace Community? Why do you contribute to the Community?

I mostly reply to posts where customers have questions or problems related to Android application monitoring.

This feedback allows us to constantly improve the documentation and provide an FAQ section for common questions/problems. And sometimes we can also use this feedback to improve the integration capability of our plugins.

And how about your life outside IT – what is your biggest passion?

Outside of IT, I like to hang out with friends, do things together, and drink some beers. My favorite sport is soccer, but these days I don't play that much anymore, because I moved away from my hometown and the soccer club I'm part of. Outside of that, I like to play video games and board games.

It would also be great if you could share with us your favorite movie, song, and/or a book. Let other Community members discover something new and interesting to watch/hear/read.

I like movies, series, and books from the genres of crime, fantasy, and science fiction. Currently, I'm reading the book series The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan, which will take some time to finish (14 books). My favorite author is Dan Brown, because I like the plot twists and riddles in his stories, and they are well written too.

I don’t have a favorite movie or tv show because there are too many good ones. I can recommend True detective, Altered Carbon, The Witcher, Game of Thrones, ...

Thomas, it’s great that we can collaborate with you on Dynatrace Community. So nice to see that you like solving problems in the most efficient way possible. And who knows, maybe it is a passion for games and science fiction that fuels the engineering pursuits that you use and create in a real-world way. 😊

Altered Carbon is one of its kind. It is so well imagined story that I started getting dreams about it at night after watching the series.

Congrats, Thomas. Way to go.
