Why do we need ActiveGate for Dynatrace?

hi All,

Can someone explain me why do we need Active Gate in Dynatrace unlike Appmon. Does it has any Pros and Cons . We are planning to move from Appmon to Dynatrace.

Thanks,

Sree

Hi Sree,

actually it's the other way around: the ActiveGate is an optional component for Dynatrace that acts sort of like the Collector acts in AppMon (which is mandatory). So it's main function is being a proxy for OneAgent traffic, compressing it and making it easier to import data from different networks where you would only need one firewall rule instead of one for every server. It also has other functions as you will find in the documentation: https://www.dynatrace.com/support/help/deploy-dyna...

As I said, ActiveGates are optional. You can directly send data from your OneAgents to your Dynatrace instance.

best regards
Franz

there is also functionality of dynatrace that requires activegate, f.e. monitoring of vmware, collecting of process memory dumps.

Thanks Rastislav,

One query - In scenarios like Dynatrace on Cloud providers like AWS or Azure but not vmware in that case ?

/Sree

not 100% sure what you mean, but also if dynatrace is deployed in cloud/saas, activegate can be used to monitor vmware (it just need access to vcenter and proper account to do that)

The useful link Franz supplied no long exists and you are now displayed a page that no longer shows that break down.. I came back here to refresh my knowledge on that to find it less usefull now.

when why does the documentation lead me to BELIEVE that I must have it?
