eBPF Service Discovery

Peter_Youssef

Dynatrace offered a built-in feature through injected oneAgent modules to facilitate discovery of active services on the network.

Pros:

  1. Safe way of identifying services that need to be monitored.
  2. low to no overhead.
  3. no performance impact.
  4. you can automate it via API.
  5. can be defined on the Host and host group levels.
  6. security policies are configurable as well.

Cons:

  1. Doesn't have as of now 😎😊

Hello @Peter_Youssef

In my opinion, this feature is used by Dynatrace to collect information through eBPF for the "Discovery and Coverage" application, enabling the discovery and mapping of services and their dependencies (Smartscape) :

However, it does not allow for measuring latency, failure rate, or throughput on services.

I am looking for an alternative to Datadog's Universal Service Monitoring mode, which provides these capabilities (metrics latency/error/throughput, alerting, SLOs, without apm agent).

Am I correct in my understanding?

Thank you.

Hello @AurelienGravier

Appreciate your valuable inputs, it's actually right for the below reasons:

  • The illustrated option, is available through the managed deployments.
  • As far as you know the managed limitations and these are currently covered through the new enhancements and SaaS innovations.
