We have, using the MQ Active Gate, configured, on our custom device configs, to check the box for
Auto Alert on DLQ messages, Auto-Alert on Retry channel status, and Auto-Alert on high queue depths, but when I triggered a message to go to the Sys DLQ, trigger a channel, retry, and (finally) trigger a high queue condition, nothing seemed to register for the device. Is there some other setting (in MQ, perhaps?) that we may have missed for these to work?

From what you are saying it all sounds properly configured.
Could you open a support case for it so they can take a look at your logs, etc.?
Hi @Larry_S, have you eventually opened a support ticket to this case? Or maybe have you found another way to find a solution?
Our Dynatrace team did just that and they "magically" resolved the issues with the "auto alerts". Unfortunately, I was not made aware of what Hogwarts thing occurred.
