How is the network link utilization for X intervals calculated for Alerts?

We're receiving odd utilization percentages (>100%) in the message body for a user defined link.

It's a network utilization alert triggered when the current incoming or outgoing utilization, calculated for the last 6 intervals (30 minutes) for link usage traffic exceeds 90% in at least one direction

Alerts were triggered for this link at:

  • 08:10
  • 10:15
  • 10:55
  • 13:00
  • 15:05
  • 17:40

I've attached a DMI of the charting incoming and outgoing utilization for this day and an export of the data with alert times and content highlighted, looking at this exported data the Alert should only have been triggered at 08:25.

The Link is defined with a threshold of 4000000 bits in and 4000000 bits out.

    Hi Carl

You have to remember that DC RUM has no concept of how big a link is, this is a manual configuration. If for example the IP address range for the link is wrong or someone upgraded the links then this would be inaccurate.

The alerts could also be affected if someone changed any of the settings during that time, it could be a configuration issue or it could be a bug.

Can you attach your alert definitions file?

    Hi Al,

Here it is: alarm-custom.txt (Changed to a .TXT as .XML cannot be uploaded)

We've checked the IP Address range and that it is a 4MB line in and out and that this is configured in the sites definition.

    Thanks for the help,
