Introducing Member of the Month!

@kumaravel once dreamed of becoming a pilot, and while life had other plans, he still helps teams see the bigger picture from above. These days, he’s flying solo, running his own company in the Netherlands, which takes real courage! His commitment, though, is a whole other story. He never leaves a project unfinished, and that habit goes well beyond his clients. Read on to find out!

Hello Kumaravel! Shed some light on your life’s journey.

I was born in Tamil Nadu, India, but I grew up in Mumbai, one of India’s busiest and most vibrant cities. Growing up in such a diverse environment gave me the opportunity to experience different cultures and perspectives.

As a child, I enjoyed playing cricket and football, and I always dreamed of becoming a pilot! I’m still not entirely sure where that dream came from, but life clearly had different plans for me.

I went on to study Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, but my curiosity about programming and technology eventually led me toward a career in IT.

Looking back, my journey has been shaped by curiosity, unexpected opportunities, and a willingness to keep learning and exploring new things.

What is your professional background?

My professional journey has taken me through different areas of IT, including Identity and Access Management, infrastructure, DevOps, and monitoring.

My interest in monitoring began while working in Identity and Access Management (IAM), where monitoring distributed systems was essential. Fascinated by the visibility it provided, I gradually took ownership of the monitoring stack alongside my IAM responsibilities.

This experience later led me to work with a Netherlands-based client, where I helped establish Business Activity Monitoring as a standard practice. It was also around this time that I first came across Dynatrace. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to work with it then, it sparked my curiosity.

I later moved into DevOps, but monitoring remained an important part of my work. Eventually, a former client offered me an opportunity to work on their existing monitoring platform while preparing for a transition to Dynatrace. This motivated me to take the next step and become an independent consultant.

Today, I work as a freelance Observability Consultant through my company, Keep IT Easy B.V., based in the Netherlands. My work primarily focuses on Dynatrace, helping organizations improve observability, automate processes, and develop custom integrations.

How does Dynatrace fit into the picture, and what was the biggest challenge Dynatrace helped you overcome?

Dynatrace has played a significant role in my transition from traditional monitoring to modern observability. I’ve primarily worked with Dynatrace SaaS, including the latest Grail-powered platform.

One interesting technical challenge was implementing customized Linux monitoring with multiple alert thresholds using Dynatrace anomaly detection and Workflows. I’ve also enjoyed extending Dynatrace through custom Extensions and OpenPipeline to bring additional data into the platform.

Another area I’ve found particularly valuable is using DQL to build dashboards and analyze data more flexibly. Being able to parse and transform data at query time, without requiring everything to be preformatted beforehand, opens up many possibilities.

Beyond the technical challenges, I’ve also enjoyed helping drive Dynatrace adoption across different teams, encouraging them to move beyond traditional dashboard-based monitoring. Helping teams understand how Davis AI can proactively detect problems and identify probable root causes has been particularly rewarding.

What excites me most is how Dynatrace continues to evolve into a platform where we can build custom solutions.

What makes Dynatrace Community important to you?

“I initially joined the Dynatrace Community to find answers to technical challenges and learn from other users. What made me stay was the collaborative environment and the willingness of members to share knowledge and experiences.”

Over time, I started contributing through discussions and sharing solutions, including custom applications like Lookup Table Manager and Doc Manager.

My advice to newcomers: Don’t hesitate to ask questions and share what you learn. Even a small contribution can make a difference to someone else!

Tell us something about you that most people don’t know. What is your biggest joy or passion in life?

My biggest joy is spending quality time with my family. I enjoy traveling, exploring new places, and working on small DIY projects. I also make it a point to visit India every year to spend time with my extended family and stay connected to my roots.

List a few facts we likely didn’t know about you! What’s on your bucket list?

I enjoy watching movies and have a funny habit of finishing every movie I start, even when it’s not particularly interesting!

On my bucket list is attending Dynatrace Perform in person, connecting with the wider Community, and perhaps even sharing some of my own experiences or solutions.

Looking ahead, I’d love to explore more countries, experience different cultures, keep learning new technologies, and contribute more to the tech community.

What achievement are you most proud of?

I’m proud of taking the leap into independent consulting and establishing Keep IT Easy B.V. My wife’s encouragement and support played an important role in giving me the confidence to take that step.

Another achievement I find particularly rewarding is developing custom Dynatrace applications and sharing my ideas and solutions with the Community. Seeing an idea turn into a practical solution that others might find useful gives me a real sense of satisfaction.

I’m equally proud of building a life and career in the Netherlands while maintaining a strong connection with my family in India.

Thank you!

Thank you, Kumaravel, for every solution and answer you’ve shared with our community. Fingers crossed that Perform makes it off your bucket list soon, ideally with you on stage showing off one of your clever custom apps. Until then, we’ll be cheering for you, your family, and Keep IT Easy!
