A quick look at the posting features worth knowing about in Discourse — both new capabilities and things that work a bit differently. For the full guide, see Posting & Replying — Everything You Need to Contribute.
Reply to the topic or to a specific post. You have two ways to join a conversation. Use the Reply button at the bottom of the topic to respond to the discussion as a whole, or use the arrow button on any individual post to reply directly to that comment.
Select text to quote it. Highlight any text in a post and a Quote button appears. Click it to pull that exact passage into your reply — you can do this across multiple posts in a single reply.
Paste a link to get a preview card. Drop any URL on its own line in the editor and Discourse automatically turns it into a rich preview — title, description, image. No extra steps needed.
Keyboard shortcuts make everything faster. The ones worth learning first:
| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| `C` | Create a new topic |
| `R` | Reply to the topic |
| `Shift` + `R` | Reply to a specific post |
| `Q` | Quote a post |
| `E` | Edit your post |
| `Ctrl` / `⌘` + `Enter` | Submit your post |
| `L` | Like a post |
| `B` | Bookmark a post |
| `J` / `K` | Move down / up through topics or posts |
| `/` | Open search |
Your drafts are always saved. Navigate away mid-reply and your draft is waiting when you come back. A bar at the bottom of the screen lets you reopen it.
