Wow, this challenge is polemic!
I have a lot of them, as a great nerd, most of them are from the Comic-books. I always liked Anti-heroes instead of Heroes, because I think they are more "real", they know the taste of the pain and the sadness, stopping giving context, here you go:

"With great power comes great responsibility" by Uncle Ben, paternal uncle and father figure of Peter Parker (Spiderman).

Ohh, this one it's an important one!

I'll break the pathos of the topic: "It depends." Fits almost everywhere 😄
On the serious hand, I really appreciate Asimov's "The true delight is in the finding out rather than in the knowing." It reminds me to enjoy the process rather than rush into the final effects.

Ok, now I also think of Reiner Kunze's poem "Carlina" (my translation):
Stay close to the earth
Do not cast shadows on others
In the shadow of others, shine
This plant - Carlina - is known for its ability to thrive in harsh conditions, growing in rocky, mountainous terrains with limited resources. In folk traditions, this represents perseverance through hardship. Despite its resilience, it remains close to the ground.
To me, this poem is about the humble yet powerful stance of remaining grounded while radiating one's own light without imposing it on others. And this is how I want to go through life 🙂

"It depends" is always the best reply I can give, when I don't know the answer 🤣
Oracle DBAs always give that reply!
But, also 42. I have had a case where the solution was 42, and it was a magnificent laugh!

I was actually thinking of a quote this morning, so I will stick to that one.
“You Either Die a Hero or Live Long Enough to See Yourself Become the Villain”. It is a quote by Christopher Nolan’s brother and is from my favorite movie of all time, The Dark Knight.
I was thinking about it based on trying to stay as good as I can for as long as I can, and never take things for granted in my professional life. Trying to stay a hero/role model as long as possible.

“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
– Dumbledore (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban )
One of my personal favorites 🙂

Some of my favorites....
On a lighter note ...🤠

For me lines that come to my mind for this topic are:
Wer will findet Wege
Wer nicht will findet Auswege
I only knew that in german, but it can be translated to english representing quite the same statement:
Those who want will find a way
Those who don't want will find a way out

I will join @Patrick_H on the German quotes:
"Was man ernst meint, sagt man am besten im Spaß." - Wilhelm Busch (1832 - 1908)
It means, if you mean it seriously, it is best said jokingly. While this might not sound very honest/direct, I think it can be seen in a different way. We all have our faults and shortcomings, so why not have a laugh at them once in a while. Not all feedback has to be communicated in a negative and strict way.
“Progress, not perfection, is the path to success.” - Unknown
Something that I should remember more often.

One of my favs, an excerpt appropriate to our work in Observability:
Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy. For if you bake bread with indifference, you bake a bitter bread that feeds but half man’s hunger. And if you grudge the crushing of the grapes, your grudge distils a poison in the wine. And if you sing though as angels, and love not the singing, you muffle man’s ears to the voices of the day and the voices of the night."
- Kahlil Gibran, 1883-1931

Also, from my favorite movie & novel The Hunt for Red October:
"The hard part about playing chicken is knowin' when to flinch."

“Once upon a time, there were four people named Everybody, Somebody, Nobody, and Anybody.
Whenever there was a job to be done, Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did.
Somebody got upset because it was Everybody’s job.
In the end, Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.”

All of the quotes below come from a book that really blew my mind this year - "Educated" by Tara Westover.
“We are all of us more complicated than the roles we are assigned in the stories other people tell”
“Whomever you become, whatever you make yourself into, that is who you always were.”
“To admit uncertainty is to admit to weakness, to powerlessness, and to believe in yourself despite both. It is a frailty, but in this frailty there is a strength: the conviction to live in your own mind, and not in someone else’s.”
Plus some extra from my all-time favorite Brene Brown:
“Authenticity is a collection of choices that we have to make every day. It's about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let our true selves be seen.”
“Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.”

Mine is a bit more internally motivating than worldly wisdom, but my regular mantra at yoga is "Today, I am the greatest of all time" - a quote by the late, great professional baseball player, Rickey Henderson.
I use this to ground me when I am feeling uncertain about myself or need that extra bit of stability. Not every day is going to be my best day, but I am going to make the most of every single day and tomorrow I will start right over and try to have a great day again.
Perhaps this isn't what Rickey meant, as he probably really was the greatest of all time, but I use it tell myself there's nothing I can't do if I try. It just might not be today.
[did I know how to put to words what this quote meant to me before today? absolutely not lol - thanks for making me think about it!]

I love how simultaneously simple and profound this quote is. Thank you for sharing it with us! ❤️
17 Apr 2025 09:08 AM
"Se ni’ mondo esistesse un po’ di bene
e ognun si considerasse suo fratello,
ci sarebbe meno pensieri e meno pene
e il mondo ne sarebbe assai più bello"
that could be translated as:
"If everyone treated each other as brothers and embraced goodness, the world would be a much better place with less worry and suffering."
This quote was said in an unusual context, which likely contributes to its iconic status.

For me, no doubt, especially in professional terms, but also in personal terms:
Attribution is not easy, normally attributed to Peter Drucker, but goes way behind, with the famous words of Lord Kelvin (1883):

Oooh I love this one!
I'm going to go with a theme here and quote The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, or The Restaurant at the End o the Universe which are some of my favorite books in the world. Douglas Adams's real talent for comedy and depth shines bright.
I think Adam's quotes help us accept the absurdity of the universe and find joy in the whole thing.
"In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
---
" “You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young."
"Why, what did she tell you?"
"I don't know, I didn't listen.” "
---
"If there's anything more important than my ego around, I want it caught and shot now."
---
"For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons."

I got a lot of quotes memorized due to a ton of trivia and pop culture consumption, but I'll sum up a few of my most memorable of all time:
1. "Remember us better than we are" - Penny Dreadful(at least that's where I heard it)
2. "Memento Mori(Remember you will die"- Latin proverb
3. "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here" - Dante Alighieri, Inferno(or me when I debug AKS issues)
4. "What is Jerusalem worth? Nothing...Everything." - Kingdom of Heaven
5. "People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people." - V for Vendetta
6. "All the world's a stage, and all men and women merely players" - William Shakespeare

I can only remember a quote from the famous personality and Spiritual Guide of kashmir also Called Sheikh-Ul-Alam or Alamdar-e-Kashmir.
In Kashmiri ''Ann poshi teli yeli wan poshi'' which translates as "Food will thrive only as long as the woods survive"

From Pulp Fiction: "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of the evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and goodwill, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper, and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers, and you will know my name is the Lord."....
From The Big Lebowski: "Shut the f*** up, Donny."
From Blood In Blood Out: "Vatos Locos forever."

“It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness; that is life.” - Jean Luc Picard, Star Trek: The Next Generation
As someone who struggles with perfectionism, this quote really helps to put things in perspective. Life becomes a lot easier when you accept that sometimes things just don't work out, regardless of how much effort you put in. It's not an excuse to give up, but it's a good way of going easy on yourself when you need to.
"We do have a lot in common. The same earth, the same air, the same sky. Maybe if we started looking at what's the same instead of looking at what's different, well, who knows?" - Meowth, Pokemon: The Movie
Some variation of this quote has been said a million times over across media but something about an animated cat with a Brooklyn accent saying it seems to make it all the more true, for some reason.
And on a less serious note...
"Back in my day, we didn't have fancy tanks! We had sticks. Two sticks and a rock for the entire platoon! And we had to share the rock!" - Sgt. Johnson, Halo 2
This is how I feel when I think about when I first started with Dynatrace about 8 years ago compared to now. My first client had DCRUM/DTNAM and boy did that feel like rocks and sticks compared to the Dynatrace tank of today.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step
This is one of my favorite Japanese quotes. It shows that no matter how big something is, it's important to take the first step. It means that even a long journey begins with the first step.

Hi,
Ouuuch my list is big but:
"Tell me who you hang out with and I'll tell you who you are".
"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" and in the same meaning:
"Don't neglect anything, you should know that mountains are made of stones".
...Etc.
