📬 Dynatrace Tips: Handling Multiple Recipients in Email Actions

When configuring email notifications in Dynatrace, it's important to understand how different both email actions behave—especially when sending to multiple recipients and one or more addresses are invalid or rejected.

We maintain two types of email actions:

1. Dynatrace Send Email Action

  • Behavior: If at least one recipient is valid, the email is sent.
  • Rejected Recipients: Logged in the action output, but do not cause the entire action to failDaveFz_2-1750073792295.png

2. M365 Send Email Action

Unlike the Dynatrace Send Email Action, the M365 Send Email Action only fails when one or more recipient addresses are incorrectly formatted. For example, an address like 'test.com' (missing the @ symbol) is considered invalid. In such cases, the M365 action will fail and no email will be sent to any recipients.

  • Behavior: If any recipient is rejected, the entire email is not sent.
  • Error Handling: The action fails, and no recipients receive the message.

🔍Why This Matters

This difference can impact alerting reliability and troubleshooting. For example:

  • If you're using the M365 Send Email Action and one recipient is misconfigured, no one gets the alert.
  • With the Dynatrace Send Email Action, some recipients still get notified, and you can investigate the failed ones later.

Tip

When using the M365 Send Email Action, consider validating recipient addresses regularly or using distribution groups to reduce the risk of failure.
