Agent update process windows/linux

Hello,

From the help page we get some information about the agent update process,

Dynatrace OneAgent automatically downloads all necessary binaries and libraries and installs them for you.

So I assume,

- the agent downloads the standard installation package from the server?

- this done by the watchdog process and the packaged is checked?

- The installation is a default uninstall/install (the same as a manual install)

- The dynatrace processes are restarted

- The server is notified to mark server processes that need to be restarted?

Is this an accurate description what happens?

Answers below for each question:

  • the agent downloads the standard installation package from the server?
yes, but via normal agent connection where the current agent is connected. Typically via ActiveGate.
  • this done by the watchdog process and the packaged is checked?
no, via the OS agent process (oneagentos), the installation file is checked and validated
  • The installation is a default uninstall/install (the same as a manual install)
no, it's an upgrade, it does not get uninstalled and installed again
  • The dynatrace processes are restarted
Yes, the basic processes (os monitoring / plugin daemon / log daemon ) are restarted after upgrade. The deeply monitored processes (the monitored application processes) are not restarted
  • The server is notified to mark server processes that need to be restarted?
The server validates that there is older OneAgent loaded to application processes and marks the processes recommended to restart so a newer OneAgent will be present in the processes.
