Can a management zone be part of another management zone?

When setting up a management zone, can one management zone contain another or is there no value to doing this?

Hey Kieron
No I don't believe this is possible. However they can contain the same entities. So you could have a production one and then a production-systemName one.

Also entities can only belong to a max of 200 management zones and a management zone entity selector rule does not support mentioning other management zones. This info and more can be found in these docs https://docs.dynatrace.com/docs/shortlink/management-zone-rules.

Hi @kieronM

As per Dynatrace documentations:

  • Multiple monitored entities can be part of multiple management zones through the management zone configuration rules.
  • Management zone permissions can be overlapped and subject to continuous changing as per monitoring requirement and app owner preferences.
  • In the configurations UI, it's not available to configure a management zone as a part of another management zone..
  • You can create, update, and delete management zone configurations either through UI or Rest API "environment API v2" > Settings - Objects. create access token with settings.read or settings.write based on the required action.
  • If you need to check through the entity selector, you can give a try and keep us posted if it works for you.

Hi,

But one entity can be in more than one zone at the same time. For example, host A can be in MZ X and MZ Y at the same time.

It would be same for another entities (processes, services...)
