Make a root span fail on a failed service call in a span lower in the tree

I am trying to make the error that happens in the service call to be also set on the root span.

I tried setting some failure detection rules but cannot seem to get it to work. Is this possible? The root span should fail/error on the failed request shown with the arrow.
