Using missing data settings to alert for availability

Hi community,

I'm trying to create an alerting profile to track Azure SQL Managed Instance availability (alert when no instance is detected). However, there isn't any metric events related to that. 

I thought of several workarounds:

1. Creating a formula to alert when io_bytes_read + io_bytes_written = 0. 

2. Create a metric events and toggle on the "alert during missing events" button.

Does anyone have any experience regarding this?

I can confirm that option 2 is the easiest method to alert on data gaps. But note this is only available for Metric Selector and not Metric Keys.
