Bald eagle was my first thought for the United States. I had to go ask ChatGPT and thankfully it said the same thing but also added a American Bison. Sorry I don't have any pictures that I took.
From ChatGPT:
The Bald Eagle is considered a national treasure of the United States.
It was officially adopted as the national bird and symbol in 1782 because of its strength, freedom, and long life, and it appears on the Great Seal of the United States. Bald eagles are protected by federal law under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, making them both a symbol and a legally safeguarded part of American heritage.
If you were asking in the broader sense, some also consider the American Bison a national treasure β it was declared the national mammal in 2016.
So you could say the U.S. has:
Bald Eagle π¦ β national bird, symbol of freedom
American Bison 𦬠β national mammal, symbol of strength and resilience

This little orange bird with a crown on its head became Israelβs national bird in 2008 in honor of celebrating 60 years of Israeli independence. The president at the time, Shimon Peres, announced the birdβs new position, which again, was chosen by the people of Israel. These birds have been in Israel for thousands of years and are even mentioned in Book of Deuteronomy.

Love this. I had to go look for Hoopoe in Deuteronomy and now I see :). Thanks for sharing.

This is the National Bird of Argentina.
The official national animal of Argentina is the ovenbird (Furnarius rufus). It is also known as the "homemaker," "insect hunter," or "mason bird." It is a small, reddish-brown bird known for its clay nests, which resemble ovens.
In addition to the ovenbird, Argentina has other emblematic animals and national symbols, such as the Andean condor and the jaguar. The Andean condor is a majestic bird that appears on the national coat of arms. The jaguar, although not the official national animal, is an important symbol of Argentine fauna and is in danger of extinction.

Ha! We're almost neighbors, I'm from Rio Grande do Sul so close from Argentina and we do have a lot of shared cultures. So, from us this little bird is the Rufous hornero (JoΓ£o-de-barro) π

I don't think Portugal has a national animal. The Portuguese man oβ war isn't really Portuguese, and not something to meet or get near, not even for a picture.
So I'll name the rooster of Barcelos. Not really an animal, but a colorful, styled cockerel. And yes, it's made it up to space, with the help of a friend of mine:

As someone who grew up in India and now living in Australia, I get to choose from two stunningly different landscapes, each vibrant and wild in its own way. π
The Royal Bengal Tiger, national animal of India
Symbolism: Strength, power, and grace
The Indian peacock, national bird of India
Symbolism: Beauty, elegance, and pride
Ganges River Dolphin, national aquatic animal of India
Symbolism: Environmental awareness and biodiversity
Interestingly we have a national heritage animal too , the Indian elephant
Symbolism: Wisdom, royalty, and cultural significance
Red Kangaroo, national animal of Australia
Also, only animal I could dare to get a selfie π π€³
Emu, national bird of Australia
Interesting fact - These two animals were chosen not only because they are native to Australia, but also because neither can easily walk backward, symbolizing progress and forward movement π€

Hi,
Just to comment two of them.

In the Czech Republic, the national animal is the Czech double-tailed lion, which is paradoxical since lions do not live in the Czech Republic, the heart of Europe (not counting those in zoos, and they donβt have two tails). Then there is the black eagle, which is a similar kind of fairy tale.
According to ChatGPT, the lion looks like this, and I hope I get to see it someday π π
When I think about it, that lion actually has three tails, doesnβt it?

In Brazil we have many native animals that could represent our wildlife.
I will list some here (all pics from internet, since I had no chance to take one by myself)
Arara Azul
.
Onça Pintada
.
Lobo GuarΓ‘
.
Boto Cor de Rosa
.
And here, some plus. In Brazil we have lots of these dogs and "rat dogs". They're friendly, and have no enemies.
Cachorro Caramelo
.
Capivara.
.
And a bonus, the Brazilian Eagle, which is way bigger than the Bald one, and the one I use as mascot for my Motorcyle club.

For Austria the national animal would be the golden eagle (Kaiseradler), which also is on the coats of arms, but if you want it more wilderness related the national bird is the barn swallow (Rauchschwalbe) - could not yet snap a picture myself as they are pretty fast fliers. You often can see them fly and it is a common rule that if they fly low that weather will turn bad (lower barometric pressure keeps their food insects lower to the ground).

Japan does not have a designated national animal.
However, there are rare places in Japan where wild deer and humans coexist. Many deer live around Nara Park, a popular tourist destination for both domestic and international visitors. These wild deer have been living in this area for 1,300 years. Nara's deer have been carefully protected as messengers of the gods since the establishment of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. While deer are not rare, you can see some interesting sights here. For example, you can see deer resting in front of souvenir shops, Deer walking across the crosswalk, and strolling around the adjacent university campus. You can also see many deer on Google Street View.

Just coming back from my honeymoon we spent time in Sweden (where I grew up) and Norway. One animal present in both countries, and in Sweden known as "The king of the forest" is the elk/moose.β
We even have parks where you can go and pet them. I went to this one last year: https://gardsjoalgpark.se/en/ their antlers are very nice to touch.

In Slovakia, Brown Bear is the king of the mountains. I was so far lucky not to meet one and take pictures. There are enough pictures of Brown Bears on the internet, but I'm sharing a picture of a bear den and signs on a tree when a bear marks his place π

I've heard in the news that the chances of meeting a bear in person in Slovakia keep on rising, so wishing you to keep on walking different paths than them! π

Hello,
The Gallic rooster is the most symbolic animal of France : Cocoricooooooooooooo !

Originally from Ukraine, I'm going to share some "unofficial" symbols of my motherland:
- Nightingale, as our language is sometimes poetically referred to as the "nightingale's language" or "Π‘ΠΎΠ»ΠΎΠ²'ΡΠ½Π° ΠΌΠΎΠ²Π°" (Solov'yina mova), for its melodious and rich sound;
- ox, as it's historically any Ukrainian farmer's best friend, helping in plowing the land and pulling caravans;
- horse, faithful companions of the Cossack (an image of modern Ukrainian stunt performers).

now living in Gdynia, Poland, and the unofficial symbol of Gdynia is the wild boar, that can be seen so politely crossing the street in the right place π€£

Hi Folks,
We have a law from 2004. about the national treasures (animals). There are on the list: cattles, sheeps, dogs, horses, pigs, goats, fishes, pigeons, donkey, chikens, ducks, goose, turkey, rabbit.
In order to understand why these ones national treasures you should know that the Hungarians were a nomadic tribe until 895 AD.
This was our migration route from Asia to Europe from 2500 BC to 895 AD. So domestic animlas were very important for the tribe.
After the foundation of Hungarian Kingdom 1000 AD, the country became of Europe's panrty (cattle, wine, wheat) in the XIII. - XV. centuries. It took until the Ottoman empire invasion and conquer of Hungary and this role moved to Poland and Ukraine.
So my favourit ones from the animal list:
Hungarian grey cattle:
Racka sheep:
Hungarian Pointer (Vizsla):
Hungarian Sheepdog (Komondor):
Puli:
Best regards,
JΓ‘nos

The lion is a national symbol of Bulgaria. It is depicted on our coat of arms. Our currency is called the lev, which is an old form of the word βlion.β
In Bulgaria, depictions of lions can be found on various historical monuments. The oldest ones are on slabs discovered in the city of Stara Zagora, dating back to the 9thβ10th century. In the famous βChatalar Inscriptionβ of Khan Omurtag, also from the 9th century, it is written:
βKanasubigi Omurtagβ¦ while residing in the capital Pliska, built an aul on the Tuchaβ¦ and in this aul he placed four columns, and on top of the columns he placed two lions.β - and the original text in Bulgarian:
A lion is also present in the unique rock relief of the Madara Rider. The lion appears in the symbolism of Bulgarian tsars as well β for example, under Ivan Shishman.
During the National Revival, the lion once again became the most widespread Bulgarian symbol. Paisii Hilendarski wrote in his Slavonic-Bulgarian History that the Bulgarians had a lion on the royal seal β a symbol of the courage and invincibility of the Bulgarian warriors, who fought βlike lions.β
The depictions of the lion on almost all of the flags of the rebels from the 'April Uprising' are proof that it was perceived as a national symbol. During the preparation for the uprising, flags bearing a fierce lion and the sacred words βFreedom or Deathβ were made in the four revolutionary districts.

As @AntonioSousa previously stated, I can't think of a Portuguese national animal...
But we do have some species which are native of Portugal, one of which is very distinctive: the "Puro Sangue Lusitano", or "Pure Blood Lusitano", which is a horse breed!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lusitano
Very famous, and also very exclusive if it is really really really a pure breed, we even have an International Fair to celebrate it and its exquisite habilities:
