Hello Wai Keat! Shed some light on your life's journey.
As a telecommunication engineering student looking for a job in my final semester, much like most of my peers, I didn't know what I wanted, I only knew what I didn't want.
Something with satellite dishes, optical fiber, semiconductors, or cell towers? None of that was for me. So the next logical thing to explore was to go into the IT industry rather than stick with the semicond or telco world.
Back then, there was no arms race in AI, no arms race in hardware or data centers. It was just the era of software-eat-the-world. So venturing into IT did feel scary, but at least I knew it would be the 'exciting' kind of scary.
Growing up as the youngest child, I never really had to take risks or be outspoken. But graduating from university certainly makes you feel like you're at a crossroads in life, and I thought maybe it's time to be more intentional about the choices I make.
So I ended up starting as a consultant, because:
- Being a consultant means "You need to be outspoken and communicate in a clear and concise manner"
- Venturing into IT at that moment meant "You better take a bold move when you're young, not when you're old"
What is your professional background?
I've been through multiple roles at my previous company. Currently, I'm taking on the role of AiOps Engineer at Keppel Technology Solutions Pte Ltd.
Basically, my day-to-day is mostly about co-owning the Dynatrace Platform with my customer, catering to their observability needs, or troubleshooting any issue with Dynatrace.
How does Dynatrace fit into the picture, and what was the biggest challenge Dynatrace helped you overcome?
I was using Dynatrace Managed and Dynatrace SaaS Classic, but in my current job, I'm using Dynatrace SaaS Grail only.
The greatest thing for me is that SaaS Grail now has DQL, which gives me more flexibility when it comes to massaging data. This offers me more freedom when it comes to dashboard crafting.
What makes Dynatrace Community important to you?
"To me, it is a great place where many kind humans come together to help each other."
The Community started out as a means for me to accelerate my learning. (I used to subscribe to every single post back then, to know what others had gone through. That way, I could be better prepared whenever I faced a novel problem in the future.)
I remember getting the help I needed with AppMon and DCRUM while I was trying to solve something urgent for my customer. That was the moment I decided I should pay it back and help other people in the community when they're in need too. Great things and great communities need to be maintained and preserved.
What is your biggest joy or passion in life?
Unlike most people, who derive their pleasure mostly from good food or shopping, for me, when I'm not working, I'd either be hiking, playing badminton, listening to music, or reading.
List a few facts we likely didn't know about you! What's on your bucket list?
While I don't have any plans or dream for the future yet, my bucket list (for now 🤣) :
- Hike/Climb as many mountains or hiking trail as I could, for those mountains where their altitude is 6,000m or above 🏔️
- Skydiving, bungee jump, HALO jump, paragliding (well, just any 'aerial sports' I guess) 🪂
- Getting a 🥇,🥈, or🥉medal in at least an open tournament of badminton men's single
- Acquire the skill of horse-riding 🐴
What achievement are you most proud of?
Private: A solo trip to Hong Kong, where I spent a total of 14 hours just hiking on Lantau Island, alone.
Professional: Joining a start-up for my first job, while everyone else was joining an MNC or SME.
