Does Dynatrace SaaS (Gen3) support archiving data to AWS S3 or Azure Blob Storage for long-term retention?

Hi Community,

We are using Dynatrace SaaS (Gen3) and are evaluating options for long-term data retention and backup.

Does Dynatrace provide any native capability to archive or export observability data (metrics, logs, traces, events, etc.) to customer-managed storage, such as:

  • AWS S3
  • Azure Blob Storage

Our objective is to retain historical data beyond the standard Dynatrace retention periods and maintain a backup/archive in our own storage account.

Specifically, we would like to understand:

  1. Is there a native feature to automatically archive data from Dynatrace SaaS to S3 or Azure Blob Storage?
  2. Which data types can be exported (logs, metrics, traces, events, business events, etc.)?
  3. Are there any recommended architectures or best practices for long-term retention and compliance requirements?
  4. If native archiving is not available, what approaches are commonly used by customers?

Any guidance, documentation references, or real-world experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Selvam

Dynatrace SaaS (Gen3) does not currently provide a native feature to automatically archive all observability data to customer-managed storage such as AWS S3 or Azure Blob Storage. From what I've seen, customers typically either:

  • Use Dynatrace retention settings/custom buckets for longer data retention within Grail.
  • Export required data through APIs and store it in a data lake, S3, Azure Blob, SIEM, or other long-term storage solution.

For compliance or multi-year retention requirements, API-based exports combined with customer-managed storage are generally the most common approach

Thanks,
