Dell EMC Data Domain Backup Appliance Monitoring

Hello All ,

I’d like to know if there’s an out-of-the-box Dynatrace extension available to monitor the Dell EMC Data Domain Backup Appliance (DD6400). We need to track resource usage on this appliance. If no such extension exists, could you guide me on how to build a custom extension and what details we’d need from the appliance to set up this monitoring

Thank you !!

Hello @praba24

Currently, Dynatrace does not provide a native extension for Dell EMC Data Domain appliances (such as DD6400).
The recommended approach is to build a custom extension using SNMP or API metrics from the appliance.

If you share which protocol the appliance supports (SNMP vs REST), I can give you a starter extension structure.

Hello @praba24 ,

Perfect, SNMP support makes this straightforward. You can build a Dynatrace Extension 2.0 using the SNMP data source. At a high level, the steps are:

Install the Dynatrace Extensions SDK.
Define the activation schema (e.g., IP, SNMP community string, polling interval).
Create the snmp.yaml file to specify OIDs for the metrics you want to collect (CPU, memory, disk usage, etc.).
Implement the extension logic and build the package.
Upload the extension to Dynatrace and configure monitoring.

You’ll need the list of OIDs from the Dell EMC Data Domain MIB files for resource usage metrics.

In this entire setup two files are important snmp.yaml and OIDs.
