DataDog migration to Dynatrace (Help to know DataDog?)

Hi Team,

Has anyone here been involved in a migration from DataDog to Dynatrace? I’d appreciate the opportunity to ask a few questions.

  • Did your experience with DataDog help during the transition?
  • What specific knowledge of DataDog proved useful for the migration?
  • Do you have any tips, lessons learned, or best practices to share?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hi, it depends what exactly migration means here. I haven't done migration, but played with that tool a bit. Dynatrace does lot of infra/service oriented monitoring with less effort and more automatically. I would suggest proper analysis of actual setup of Datadog monitor settings and then focus on areas, that are crucial to actual specific setup (f.e. RUM, Synthetic, Logs, Security, ..).

Makes sense.  I am still learning what is being migrated over.

Hi @Kenny_Gillette I've migrated from Datadog (Logs Only) to Dynatrace Grail.

Tips:

  • The ingestion window in Datadog is not the same from Dynatrace so if you are migrating existing dashboards in Datadog, consider using a slighty superior timeframe selector to compare values in one dashboard in DD or in Dynatrace.
  • It probes to be useful to count the total ingested records in one platform vs the other. To be able to compare the same records. And always use closed time periods, ie. Yesterday in DD vs Yesterday in Dynatrace.
  • Some views in DD are "hardcoded" to fixed periods of time, ie. 2 hours, please pay attention to that, because when you use the equivalent time selector, the time is still hardcoded to that period.
  • I've provide specific training courses to the teams using DD to smooth the transition to Dynatrace, and the use of DQL.
  • Monitors in DD are our equivalent to Metric Events in Dynatrace, please, create metrics from logs in Dynatrace because is easy later to migrate monitors to metric events in most cases.

at least these are the main points that I can share. Hope it helps.
