Format of the hostcustomproperties.conf. Can there be spaces?

We are working on updating the hostcustomproperties.conf using Puppet agent installation and some internal facts. Is there a way to get spaces in the properties or can they only be with no spaces. We tried different quotes. Could not find much in the way of documentation with the exception of:

The custom meta data that we would like to add may contain spaces.

Value cannot have spaces, you have to use underquotes I think for now. At leas I don't know any option for that.
