Business, IT industry, and… fishing? What do they have in common?

There is a saying: “Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he'll eat forever.” That is about the approach by which one can help another person. By giving a fish, the impact of our help would be limited, but sometimes very needed, and the only way to help someone quickly. Another, even better way to help others is to empower them, to teach them the method to gain the things that they need, and show places where they can seek help themselves, so the impact of our help is invaluable and in the long-term scale.

Today, in an era where digital transformation is a must, such an approach is a powerful inhibitor when it comes to building partnerships and looking for win-win situations. How exactly does it help? How does it happen that while sharing knowledge, work efficiency and adaptability of using the product increase? We can see it on Community when through various cooperation between Community members but as well by sharing knowledge, experience, and good practices everything is exposed and available to everyone, so the time needed to provide help shortens significantly.

One of the people who fish every day at “Community Lake” is Aurélien Gravier (@AurelienGravier) who is focused on gathering knowledge, learning new things, and helping others.

We invite you to read the article and get to know him closely.

Can you share some details about your past? What is your story, and how it happened that you decided to work in the IT / APM area?
I worked multiple years for a leading player in Managed Services as a run system engineer, and nobody knew how to realize a load testing campaign and a client needed one, so I tried my luck with success. Afterward, I was identified as the "performance guy", so naturally, I caught the first APM projects, and finally, I participated in building the performance monitoring team. It's been almost 10 years since I've worked on application performance monitoring.

Can you tell us a little bit about your professional life? Where do you work, and what do you do in your job? And how does Dynatrace fit into the picture?

I work for PHENISYS, a French company specializing in IT performance (observability & network). As a Dynatrace specialist (Certified Associate/Pro/Service), I manage the partnership between DYNATRACE & PHENISYS. As a Senior consultant, I have multiple roles on client observability projects as well:

  • I support them during the study phase (Interviews/PoC/PoV/Presales).
  • I define the implementation best practices and help my clients to extract the maximum value from the provided solutions.
  • And finally, I support them in boosting adoption and improving the value they can get while using Dynatrace continuously.

Can only say that it's a really exciting job!

What was the biggest challenge Dynatrace helped you to overcome?

Recently, I used Dynatrace for the FinOps aspect to measure the consumption of mutualized cloud services per application name. The application name is collected on a parameter value of a method code level and extracted through the request attributes feature. Customers can adjust service billing accurately to business units.

What brought you to our Community? What made you stay? What best advice can you give someone who just started using Community?

The Community search engine is my first reflex when facing an issue.

But Community is not just about taking, it's also about giving, so I try to help other users whenever possible. Forum is an inspiration for me, and I recommend everyone to visit Community regularly and read not only the Open Q&A section to learn new things.

Tell us something about you that most people don’t know. What is your biggest joy or passion in life?

My biggest passion is fishing. I do it whenever I can and everywhere I go. I practice Fresh & saltwater, fly fishing, street fishing, and rock fishing from a boat or the edge. Nowadays, I'm sharing these soothing moments with my son (9 years old).

What’s one thing on your bucket list? Your dream?

On the top of my bucket list are a long trip to French Polynesia with my son, my wife... and my rod fishing.

Aurelien, thank you for the help that you’re providing to other members. We can see that you do that in the Community and in your daily work with your customers, where you try not only to give them fish but also to teach them how to fish by themselves. Keep it up!

We wish your dreams from the bucket list come true and even much more success in catching large specimens on your next expeditions!
