Hello Community!

It’s a pleasure to introduce to you the Employee member of the month for August 2020. I’m always happy when our winners come from developer teams because this is one of the most important parts of our Community – connecting specialist, developers, Product Managers and everyday users together, to give each other feedback and create a better product together. Let’s bring applause to @Piotr L.!

Can you tell a little bit about your professional life? What is your role in the company and what do you do in your job?

I'm Sr. Engineer and member of the Core UI team in Dynatrace. We make sure Dynatrace UI is stable, fast and ready for next Dynatrace innovations. One of the recent visible features I contributed to is the new timeframe selector (check it out!).

I'm also in a group of tech evangelists where we go to local meetups outside the company, to share knowledge and lessons learned from Dynatrace engineering.

What Dynatrace products do you use? What do you like the most about them?

I use both Dynatrace SaaS and Managed to monitor the healthiness of our UI in production and internal infrastructure we use for development.

But when I need to track down the issue, I love to start from Real User Monitoring to learn about users' behaviors. It gives me a good understanding of how people interact with our application and together with data from JSAgent - allows analyzing the issue from button click to database calls.

Have you ever had any interesting use case for the Dynatrace product, that you found out to be particularly intriguing? Could you tell us about it?

Performance in runtime is one thing, but for me as a developer - speed of building the app, testing or quality checks - seriously affects my productivity. Therefore, we started to monitor all build steps of our UI application with custom metrics. When we see a slowdown trend for building local development version, we can investigate when it happened and track down changes that could cause it.

We also track JavaScript size of every screen to ensure application UI is quick to load.

Why do you contribute to the Community? What is your favourite thing about it?

Most of my work is hidden in internal engines, here in Community I can reach out to people using our software and learn what are their needs and problems. It helps me understand a bigger view outside my daily job.

And how about your life outside the IT – what is your biggest passion?

I'm a social person. When I don't do programming, usually I just hang out with people, party (a lot) or do sports together. Running is my favorite, by the way, this year with friends from Dynatrace we're participating in World Championships in half-marathon that takes place in Poland, Gdynia.

Ah, and I love teaching, really! In my free time, I contribute to local bootcamp, helping people understand programming better and to start their career in development. I hope one day I would give some guest lectures at the school I went to.

It would also be great if you could share with us your favorite movie, song and/or a book. Let other Community members discover something new and interesting to watch/hear/read 🙂

My first thought is quite simple - The Witcher book series, The Witcher Netflix series and The Witcher 3 game soundtrack. Yes, I'm a fan. 🙂

But also, I learned recently about quite an old-ish book, like 2000 years old.

Marcus Aurelius - the Roman Emperor was a Stoic philosopher and have written some personal diary about life. I'm surprised how adequate it is to the life we live currently! A definite recommendation to read, it's called "The meditations".

The Witcher was one of my favorite books from high school years and I am still amazed, how the story of Geralt of Rivia exploded in the last years in so many interesting ways. Thank you for this interview @Piotr and for being with us!
