[ ActiveGate] - On SaaS-Offline for 2 days !

Hi Team,

We have deployed Environment AG in our environment used for " Routing Traffic / Extensions". Just realised that our extension has no data while the devices are up and running. A deeper insight shows below:

1. Active Gate - Offline for 2 days

a. Does this affect our observability in PROD ? As we see no alerts on AG in our Problems Dashboard and can see data captured as expected - IS it because OA has taken a direct connectivity route than via AG as offline ?

2. We are using SNMP CISCO Generic Extensions in our environment. Our Client has showcased that connectivity from Target devices to AG is working fine. But in out extension page we see "Inactive For 2days"

Please advise. Thanks for your time.

Hi @Kani

Regarding the highlighted concerns as simple as that:

  • As long as the connection between AGs && Dynatrace cluster nodes is stable, the monitoring setup won't be impacted.
  • Hence, make sure the connectivity  between AGs and Cluster nodes are stable and constant.
  • Validate the AGs services, just stop and restart the AGs services on each AG separately.
  • Ensure there is no traffic blocking from network or FW sides, in case exist configure the required Proxy configurations through AGs configuration files as per the attached Hyper links.
  • Checking the AGs logs will be added value to pinpoint directly to the RC.

Dynatrace resources:

Hoping it helps.

Hello @Kani

  • You can check connectivity between AGs as sources and Cluster nodes as Destinations through telnet and Ping to ensure there is no packet drops or connection loss on port 443.
  • Regarding the Cisco devices make sure the AGs are the sources > connected to the target endpoints "Destinations" on port 161 or 162 based on the actual cisco setup.
  • As long as the highlighted components aren't connected, therefore no monitoring signals will be displayed or stored even.
  • After connection restore, the monitoring signals will flow seamlessly into Dynatrace for processing and visualization.
  • If there is network-zone failover configured properly, therefore if the AGs aren't connected to Cluster nodes then The traffic will flow directly to the second alternative zone and monitoring setup won't be impacted.

Hoping it adds value.

Hey Kani,

To answer the first question about losing observability, it should not affect anything as long as all other monitoring components are allowed to directly connect to Dynatrace SaaS and the Activegate was not running any cloud integrations or other extensions.

Also for the second point, the extension will be inactive if the Activegate is offline so there is nothing to troubleshoot there until the Activegate is running again.

As for troubleshooting the Activegate, if it is possible try running Activegate diagnostics as specified here. I suspect you won't be able to do that though as you say it's offline at the moment, so the next thing is to try and investigate why it stopped. Information on where to find the logs can be found here. While investigating you can also try restarting the Activegate as mentioned in the docs here.

Also, for the future once you have things running again you can monitor the Activegate from within Dynatrace in a couple of ways to make it easier to troubleshoot if it goes down again.

  • Activegates report a lot of self monitoring metrics so that you can get an idea of what is going on with them. Information on those metrics can be found here.
  • Using an agent you can also ingest the Activegate logs as they're generated allowing for proactive monitoring of the above mentioned logs.

Hope the above helps!
